"You're alive. That means you have
infinite potential.
You can do anything, make anything, dream anything.
If you change the world, the world will change."
- Neil Gaiman
If you change the world, the world will change."
- Neil Gaiman
We are all youthful, and so full of hope. At this stage in life, we are only just beginning to live. The opportunities before us are endless and only time is of the essence. Thus I have vowed to take up every glimpse of opportunity in hopes it will lead me to where I want to be: making the impossible, possible. Now wouldn't that be absolutely beautiful? When it's time to look back on the life you've lived, I hope you don't look back with the slightest regret. Instead I hope you can smile proudly at the fact that you have lived your life to its fullest potential and accomplished some remarkable feats.
My grey-haired manager once told me that the golden hour only lasts so long: "A twenty year window for you to prove yourself. Where your time starts now." And for such sincere advice, I was deeply touched and grateful. However, from his words evoked some worry in me: My time may start now, but I have no idea where I'm headed. Strange as it was, my next revelation came from staring at an iconic red and white picture at a drive-through. It was Colonel Sanders, a man who did not become the success that he was until he was 70, proving that age is not the limit to success. There is no 20-year window. The only thing we need to do is never stay stagnant. With no direction in mind, at least you are moving somewhere. But the whistle of the heart is soft, so do take time to slow down and listen to it from time to time. Not everyone is so blessed with a sense of direction from the very beginning.
The only thing to keep in mind is this: as long as you're alive, you
have infinite potential. Not too long ago I was but a quiet invisible
girl who was dismissed to the sidelines for more than a decade. My final
year of high school marked my turning point, when even my own teacher
of two years did not seem to know my name. From then forth, I pushed
myself out of my comfort zone. No more fear of being judged and
humiliated for simply being myself.
Being safe and silent was no longer how I wanted to live, and it
shouldn't be how you live either. Throw yourself at every possible open
door and improve yourself. Don't be afraid to experience everything life
has to offer, and that includes all the good and the bad. Challenges
are gifts and being wrong is the beginning to being right, to becoming
better. You get out of life what you put in.
My
own mother says I'm fearless, but that's simply because I have become so tired of constantly walking around in fear. There's a carelessness that I carry around with me these days. As Maya Angelou says, "Having courage does not mean that we are unafraid. Having courage and
showing courage means we face our fears, we are able to say: I have
fallen, but I will get up." So stop fearing and wake up, nothing is worse than looking back at all the missed opportunities simply because 'I was too scared'. What more is there to fear than regret?
