INTO THE WOODS

'Are we out of the woods?
Are we in the clear yet?' -Taylor Swift

I had implicitly stated in the past that I wished to stay away from using the word 'I' to begin an article, but alas, I could not avoid self reflection for inspiration. How could one avoid talking about that beautiful innocent period of life known as our 'childhood' when the inspiration behind these photos come from a land of mystical fairytales. I cannot emphasise enough how much my childhood could be summarised as a feverish obsession over princesses, and the classic Cinderella was unsurprisingly my favourite.

My whole first two decades of life had revolved around one motive: to find and marry my Prince Charming (sad upon reflection now). I advanced myself for that one sole purpose. I wanted to be beautiful, intelligent and lovable nonetheless for that one sole purpose. Ultimately I was woken from this pursuit after I encountered my first supposed 'Prince Charming' and only found emptiness. I came to realise that my true satisfaction in life is not in finding my Prince Charming, but in becoming a Queen of a kingdom I build myself, with a belief that a King will come find her in his own right time.

Twentydom is the age to explore, to seek for a direction in life, no longer aimlessly wandering and wasting days away frolicking in the sun among the field of pansies, or in front of the computer as it seems in this day and age. But do we ever stop exploring and seeking for direction? Beyond our twenties, I am almost definite that we are never really out of the woods and out in the clear. The thirties, forties, fifties; we will be constantly questioning our direction and, for those driven towards success, further exploring.

2014 has come and gone, and for me it was an impressive year. I have explored and discovered many things that I really value, and for which I will take with me into 2015. I have met a lot of amazing people and had the opportunity to become closer with many. The direction I managed to find is still quite vague, but a direction nonetheless. To my Snow White readers, those being chased into the darkness; my Rapunzel readers, those trapped with nowhere to go; my Hanzel and Gretzel readers, those seeking their way back home, and to my 'Princes', the fearless ones venturing into the woods to achieve greatness: Whatever your direction in 2014 was, and whatever it is for 2015, I hope you venture on and that good things happen for you in the New Year. 2014 was incredible and possibly unbeatable but 2015 is a mystical land not so far far away, where hopes, dreams and more achievements lie. Merry Christmas to all, and have a kick-ass New Year.

  1. Wow! Your great at writing! I do agree with what you have said. I too found emptiness when I encountered my "supposed Prince Charming". I realised too that one should focus and build and improve oneself. I think that is the most important.

  2. I want to quote this "I came to realise that my true satisfaction in life is not in finding my Prince Charming, but in becoming a Queen of a kingdom I build myself, with a belief that a King will come find her in his own right time."
